How to Get Around Naples
Walking and the central grid
The historic centre is best read on foot, but plan by elevation as well as distance. Spaccanapoli and Via dei Tribunali run across the old grid; Via Toledo and the seafront form a second walkable corridor. Pavements can be narrow or uneven, and scooters share tight streets.
Metro, rail and funiculars
Metro Line 1 connects Napoli Centrale at Garibaldi with the centre, Via Toledo and the hills. Line 2 works as an urban rail link across the city, while funiculars handle the steep ascent toward Vomero. An integrated 90-minute ticket costs €1.80, and the integrated day ticket €5.40 as checked on 29 September 2026. Validate the correct ticket before travel.
Driving and taxis
A car is a liability in the central districts. The Centro Antico restricted-traffic zone uses camera-controlled gates, and access schedules can change. Use official taxis from marked ranks or booked channels, and agree on the meter or confirm a published fixed fare.

From the airport
Alibus runs daily from Naples Airport to Napoli Centrale and the port. The single ticket costs €5 as checked on 29 September 2026. Official fixed taxi fares include €21 to Central Station or the historic-centre ZTL and €24 to Piazza Municipio. The fare to hotels in San Ferdinando is €28.50; confirm the destination and fare before departure.
Arriving by train or ship
High-speed trains place Napoli Centrale on the main Rome–Florence–Bologna–Milan–Turin and Rome–Florence–Bologna–Padua–Venice corridors. Garibaldi metro station sits below the rail terminal. From the cruise and ferry area, Municipio is the useful metro stop for the centre and Via Toledo.
Excursions
Use the Circumvesuviana network for Herculaneum, Pompeii and Sorrento, allowing extra time for busy trains and platform changes. Ferries for the islands leave from different waterfront terminals; check the operator and pier on the ticket. The Napoli Artecard includes eligible UnicoCampania transport for three days but excludes Alibus.
Accessibility and luggage
Step-free access varies by station, street and building. Ask the operator about the exact stations you need, and choose accommodation on the same level as the sights that matter most. With luggage, the airport bus or an official taxi is usually easier than combining steep pavements and station stairs.
