How to get around Delhi

Getting around

Delhi Metro is the territory's transport spine. DMRC's current network covers 416 kilometres and 303 stations across Delhi and neighbouring National Capital Region cities. Check the destination, interchange and final exit rather than assuming every named station is beside the sight.

Group attractions into corridors. The Red Fort, Jama Masjid and Chandni Chowk belong to one Old Delhi outing. Humayun's Tomb and Nizamuddin form another, while Qutb Minar, Mehrauli and Tughlaqabad need separate southern planning.

Use auto-rickshaws or app-booked and prepaid taxis for targeted final legs. Confirm the fare or app booking, match the vehicle details and keep the map open until the route is clear.

Walking is rewarding inside a district but inconsistent between districts. Shade, footway quality, road barriers and station exits vary. In severe heat, heavy rain or poor air, shorten the exposed part rather than forcing the original plan.

For airport and terminal transfers, confirm the exact terminal, railway station and station exit before departure. Delhi contains several major rail terminals and three airport terminals.

Metro and tickets

Use the official DMRC map and fare information. Airport Express links New Delhi station with the airport corridor; other lines handle most monument districts. A wrong exit can place a divided road between you and the destination.

Airport

Airport Express serves Terminal 3, while the Magenta Line serves Terminal 1. Terminal 2 is near Terminal 3, but a transfer may still be required. Confirm the terminal before leaving.

Rail stations

New Delhi Railway Station, Delhi Junction, Hazrat Nizamuddin and Anand Vihar are separate terminals. Read the full station name and code on the ticket and allow realistic transfer time.

Road transport

Official prepaid and app-based taxis operate from the airport. Elsewhere, use a verified booking or agree an auto-rickshaw fare before departure. National ceremonies can create sudden diversions.

Walking and accessible travel

The airport provides reduced-mobility assistance through airlines and accessible facilities. Metro and monument access is less uniform. Verify the station exit, footway, entrance and historic surfaces as one continuous route.
