Rio Celeste Site Features

The park's main trail leads to several signature sights: the Celeste Waterfall, a dramatic cascade of turquoise water dropping into a pool of the same striking color; the Teñideros viewpoint, where the Río Buenavista and Río Quebrada Agria — both perfectly clear on their own — merge to instantly produce the river's signature blue; and the Blue Lagoon and hot springs further along the trail, fed by the volcano's own geothermal activity.

Scientific research eventually explained the river's color as an optical effect rather than a dissolved dye: fine particles of aluminosilicate minerals suspended in the water scatter blue wavelengths of light selectively (a phenomenon known as Mie scattering), which is why swimming is not permitted in most of the river's course — the color is a property of light interacting with suspended minerals, not something that can be seen "up close" in a handful of water.
