How to get around Ottawa

Getting around

Walking is the clearest way to understand the central capital. Parliament Hill, Sparks Street, the Ottawa Locks, Major's Hill Park, ByWard Market and the National Gallery form a compact chain. Hills, winter surfaces, construction and security barriers can make the practical route longer than the map suggests.

OC Transpo runs buses and the O-Train. Line 1 crosses the central urban corridor, while Lines 2 and 4 serve the south; Line 4 links Airport station with South Keys, where an onward transfer is required toward the centre. As checked 7 October 2026, an adult Presto or contactless ride costs CAD 4.10 and includes at least a 90-minute transfer window. A one-day pass costs CAD 12.25.

Contactless debit, credit and mobile wallets work on buses and at O-Train fare gates. Use the same card or device throughout a transfer. OC Transpo states that all buses and trains are low-floor and wheelchair-accessible, but station elevators and the final pavement route still require a current check.

Gatineau uses the STO system. OC Transpo and STO accept one another's valid passes and transfers under their published arrangement, but route patterns and payment details depend on where the journey starts. Plan cross-river museum trips as a unit rather than assuming the nearest Ottawa stop is the simplest.

A car is unnecessary for a central stay and can be a burden around major events. It becomes more useful for rural Ottawa or dispersed natural areas, though some Greenbelt sites have seasonal parking and facilities. Cycling is well supported by the Capital Pathway, with more than 200 kilometres of off-road multi-use routes across the region; path maintenance and winter conditions vary.

Walking and cycling

Use the canal, Ottawa River and numbered O-Train lines as orientation anchors. The core is compact, but Parliament construction and event security can close familiar passages. The Capital Pathway connects parks, museums and both sides of the river; most routes are not cleared for ordinary cycling in winter, so check the exact segment.

OC Transpo and STO

OC Transpo buses and O-Train Lines 1, 2 and 4 cover Ottawa. The adult contactless or Presto fare was CAD 4.10 when checked, with a minimum 90-minute transfer. Valid passes and transfers work across OC Transpo and STO, which is useful for the Canadian Museum of History and other Gatineau journeys. Do not assume a fresh tap on the second system follows the same rule as a transfer.

Airport and intercity arrival

O-Train Line 4 runs from the airport to South Keys; transfer there for Line 2 and onward service toward central Ottawa. The airport also lists a 24-hour bus connection. VIA Rail's Ottawa station is at Tremblay, east of downtown, on the Ontario–Quebec corridor with direct service toward Montreal and Toronto.

Accessible and winter travel

OC Transpo buses and trains provide low-floor access, audio-visual announcements and mobility spaces. Stations include elevators, but current outages still matter; consult the operator's alert before a step-free journey. Snowbanks, slush and ice can be the weakest link between a station and entrance. In severe cold, shorten outdoor transfers and keep an indoor alternative.
