Why Plan a Trip to Australian Capital Territory the Smart Way

Every national collection Australia has is in one place here, and almost all of it costs nothing — the War Memorial, the National Gallery, the Portrait Gallery, the National Museum and Parliament House itself, within a few kilometres of each other.

The friction is that Canberra was designed for cars and distance. Nothing is quite walkable from anything else, the institutions are spread around a lake, and visitors without a vehicle spend the trip waiting.

Hire a car or a bike — the lake circuit is flat and the cycle network is the best in the country — and give it two full days rather than a stopover. Come in autumn: the planted deciduous trees turn in April, which in a city this deliberately landscaped is genuinely the point.

How to Experience Australian Capital Territory

If you travel slowly

Cycle the Lake Burley Griffin loop over a day, stopping at whichever institutions are on the bank. It is about 28 km, flat, and the best way to understand the city's plan.

If you want to see the essentials

The Australian War Memorial, the National Gallery and Parliament House — the last on a free tour, which reaches the chambers when they are not sitting. Two days.

If you seek local character

The Sunday farmers' market, a winter morning when the fog sits on the lake, and the brewery and cafe scene in the inner suburbs, which is far livelier than the city's reputation.

If you want to go beyond the obvious

Namadgi, which covers nearly half the Territory — granite ranges, Ngunnawal rock art, and snow in winter, forty minutes from a national capital.

Responsible Travel Tips

This is Ngunnawal country, and Ngunnawal people have been here for over 20,000 years. Namadgi holds rock art and occupation sites; visit the marked ones, and leave the rest alone.

The Australian War Memorial is a working place of mourning as much as a museum — the Last Post ceremony each evening closes it, and is attended rather than watched.

Namadgi and the Brindabellas burnt severely in 2003 and again in 2020. Regrowth is slow at altitude; stay on tracks, and observe total fire bans absolutely.

Canberra's institutions are publicly funded and free. The useful thing a visitor can do is spend in the suburbs rather than only at the national sites.

When to Visit Australian Capital Territory

March to May is the best window: mild, clear, and the deciduous planting turning through April in a city designed around it.

September to November brings Floriade, a month-long bulb display through spring, and the city at its greenest.

December to February is hot and dry, regularly over 35°C, and the height of bushfire season in the ranges.

June to August is genuinely cold — frosts most nights, fog on the lake, and snow in the Brindabellas. It is also the cheapest and quietest time, and the institutions are all indoors.
