How to get around Philadelphia

Walking is the best tool inside compact clusters. Indego provides round-the-clock bike share across a network of more than 250 stations. Cycling conditions vary by corridor, and rails, turning traffic and gaps in protected lanes require attention. A car is usually unnecessary for central sightseeing; parking and traffic make it more useful for a regional trip than for moving between downtown attractions.

Build days around one district and use Market Street, Broad Street, the rivers and public squares as anchors. Pavements can be narrow or uneven on older blocks. Indego works for point-to-point cycling, but check current station availability and choose a route for its cycling conditions rather than directness alone.

Bus, Metro and Regional Rail

SEPTA Bus and Metro services cover central and neighbourhood routes; Regional Rail reaches the airport and wider metropolitan area. Contactless bank cards work across the network, with tap-out required on Regional Rail. Live service information matters during maintenance, weather and large events.

Airport and intercity arrival

The Airport Line normally links Philadelphia International Airport with Center City every 30 minutes and serves stations at airport terminals. Gray III 30th Street Station, with Northeast Corridor trains connecting Boston, New York, Baltimore and Washington D.C.

Driving and accessible travel

Do not rent a car simply for central Philadelphia. Use one when the itinerary genuinely extends beyond the transit network, and verify parking before departure.
