Poland historical timeline

Chronology

  1. 1300–500 BC — The Bronze and Early Iron Ages bring rising population density, palisaded settlements called gords and the spread of Lusatian culture. The reconstructed 8th-century BC settlement at Biskupin is the one you can walk around.
  2. — At the Congress of Gniezno, Bolesław I the Brave obtains the right of investiture from Emperor Otto III, who assents to an archdiocese at Gniezno. In 1031 Mieszko II loses the royal title and flees amid a pagan reaction.
  3. — Władysław I the Short becomes the first king of a reunified Poland since 1296 and the first crowned at Wawel Cathedral in Kraków.
  4. 1333–1370 — Casimir III, the only Polish king called Great, builds extensively and reforms the army and the legal code.
  5. — Jadwiga's marriage to Władysław II Jagiełło, Grand Duke of Lithuania, founds the Jagiellonian dynasty and the Polish–Lithuanian union.
  6. — The Battle of Grunwald on 15 July is a decisive Polish–Lithuanian victory over the Teutonic Knights. It is re-enacted annually and is a fixed point of national memory.
  7. — The Union of Lublin creates the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, a federal state with an elective monarchy governed largely by the nobility. At its greatest extent in 1619 it is the largest country in Europe.
  8. — The capital moves from Kraków to Warsaw, though Wawel Castle had been the seat of Polish kings since 1038. It is why Kraków kept the coronation cathedral and Warsaw got the government.
  9. 1772, 1793, 1795 — Prussia, Russia and Austria partition Poland out of existence; the 1794 Kościuszko Uprising fails to prevent it. The country does not appear on a map again for 123 years.
  10. — Poland regains independence at the end of the First World War.
  11. — Nazi Germany invades on 1 September, opening the Second World War, and the Soviet Union invades on 17 September; under the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact the country is split into two occupation zones. The extermination camps and ghettos of occupied Poland are on this map.
  12. — The elections of 4 June, campaigned for with a Solidarity poster of Gary Cooper at high noon, end communist rule.
