Panama

Panama historical timeline

Chronology

  1. — Rodrigo de Bastidas sails west from Venezuela looking for gold and becomes the first European to explore the isthmus; Christopher Columbus follows a year later.
  2. — Balboa crosses from the Atlantic to the Pacific, proving the isthmus is the path between the seas; Panama becomes the crossroads and marketplace of Spain's empire, and Pédro Arias Dávila founds Panama City in 1519. Silver from Peru is hauled across by the Camino Real, better known as the Camino de Cruces for the number of graves along it — the trail is still there.
  3. 1538–1821 — Almost three centuries of Spanish rule, as part of the Viceroyalty of Peru. Panama's identity forms early around the isthmus as a crossing rather than a destination, which is still what it is.
  4. — The privateer Henry Morgan, licensed by England, sacks and burns Panama City, then the second most important city in the Spanish New World. The ruins of Panamá Viejo are what he left.
  5. — The Darien scheme plants a Scottish colony on the isthmus. It fails, and the debt it left contributed to the union of England and Scotland.
  6. — Bishop Luna Victoria, having founded a college in 1744, establishes the Real y Pontificia Universidad de San Javier on 3 June.
  7. — Panama breaks from Spain and joins Gran Colombia voluntarily at the end of the year, becoming part of the Republic of New Granada in 1831.
  8. 1831–1902 — The isthmus makes over eighty attempts to secede from Colombia, coming close in 1831 and again during the Thousand Days' War of 1899–1902.
  9. — The United States, working with Panamanian separatists, engineers a declaration of independence from Colombia and sends warships and marines to prevent Colombian intervention. The canal is the reason.
  10. — The United States completes the 83-kilometre canal. Toll revenue has been a significant part of Panamanian GDP ever since.
  11. — Jimmy Carter and Omar Torrijos sign the Panama Canal Treaties on 7 September. Torrijos, whose government was known for land redistribution, expanded social security and public education, dies in a plane crash in 1981.
  12. — The canal passes from the United States to Panama on 31 December, under the 1977 treaties; the surrounding territory had been returned first, in 1979. The former Canal Zone towns are now Panamanian suburbs.
  13. — The canal expansion is finished, doubling capacity. The new locks are why post-Panamax ships now cross and why the tolls still matter to the national accounts.
