How to Get Around Malta

Getting Around

Malta is small enough that a single public transport operator, Malta Public Transport, runs the buses across the islands, and its single fare is bought on the bus with cash or a contactless card: the winter single, in force from 19 October 2025 to 13 June 2026, was €2.00 and valid for two hours of travel on day services. A 12 Single Day Journeys card costs €19 and can be shared; the Explore Flex cards give unlimited travel for four days from €21 or seven days for €27. Malta International Airport is the only airport, and the operator's Airport Direct buses run from it to Valletta, Sliema and St Julian's, Buġibba, Mellieħa and the Ċirkewwa ferry terminal.

Gozo is reached by the Gozo Channel ferry from Ċirkewwa to Mġarr, a crossing of about 25 minutes that runs daily; the standard passenger fare is €4.65, and tickets are paid and validated on the Gozo side, so the outward crossing from Malta is boarded without one. A car and driver is €15.70. A day trip to Gozo takes a bus or a car to the northern tip of Malta first, and Gozo's own capital, Victoria, has the island's traffic.

Buses

Malta Public Transport is the national bus operator. A ticket is bought on the bus with cash or a contactless bank card; the winter fare of €2.00 for a single journey on day services, valid for two hours, applied from 19 October 2025 to 13 June 2026, and the operator's page is the only current source for the summer figure. The 12 Single Day Journeys card costs €19 for 12 journeys with free transfers within two hours on all day routes and can be shared between travellers; the Explore Flex card gives unlimited travel for four days from €21 or seven days for €27, and two Airport Direct trips can be added for €6.

The airport

Malta International Airport is the only airport in the islands. The airport's own transport page lists the Airport Direct services: TD1 to Rabat, Buġibba, Mellieħa and Ċirkewwa; TD2 to St Julian's, Sliema, Gżira and Msida; TD4 to Valletta and the Gozo fast ferry; TD5 to Rabat and Buġibba. The official taxi service is Malta Taxi; no fare is published on the page.

The Gozo ferry

Gozo Channel runs from Ċirkewwa on Malta to Mġarr on Gozo: crossing time about 25 minutes, daily, on a schedule published for 19 May 2025 to 8 November 2026. Standard passenger fare €4.65, night fare €4.05, children aged 3 to 12 €1.15; car and driver for vehicles up to 5.3 metres €15.70. Tickets, whether bought online or at the booths in Gozo, are validated only from Gozo before the return or start journey, and drivers board at Ċirkewwa without validating a ticket. Child tickets are sold only at the Gozo booths.
