Bassano del Grappa

How Bassano del Grappa Was Built and Evolved Over Time

Palladio's 1569 design for the Ponte degli Alpini is a covered timber deck on stone piers, and its logic is counter-intuitive. The Brenta carries violent floods and, historically, log drives from the mountains; a rigid masonry bridge would take the full force and fail catastrophically. A timber structure flexes, and when it does go, it can be rebuilt quickly to the same drawings using the same joints.

That is exactly what has happened. The bridge has been carried away or destroyed repeatedly -- most recently by retreating forces in 1945 -- and rebuilt each time to Palladio's design, most notably by the Alpini in 1948. A long structural restoration finished in 2022.

The covered roof is not decorative: it keeps the deck and joints dry, which is what allows a timber bridge to last between rebuilds at all.

In the town, the linked squares -- Piazzotto Montevecchio, Piazza Libertà, Piazza Garibaldi -- form a continuous arcaded sequence rather than one large space, which is why the centre feels intimate despite being busy.
