Finale Ligure
Finale Ligure Culture
The town's oldest cultural layer is Spanish. Finale's marquisate sat on the Cammino spagnolo and was Spanish for more than a century; Castel San Giovanni is a Spanish fortress of 1642–43, Philip V of Spain lodged at Palazzo Buraggi in 1702, and an arch in the town is dedicated to Margherita Teresa of Spain, daughter of Philip IV.
Its newest is vertical. Finale is named among the European places where sport climbing emerged, and the names of its pioneers are on the record: Gianni Calcagno, Alessandro Grillo, Vittorio Olinto Simonetti, Roberto Titomanlio and the brothers Eugenio and Gianluigi Vaccari in the exploratory phase; Giovanni Massari, Martino Lang, Andrea Gallo, Patrick Berhault, Nicola Ivaldo, Luca Biondi and Marco and Luciano Zambarino in the sporting one.
It gives a national prize for restlessness. The Festa dell'Inquietudine, conceived in 1996 by the Circolo degli Inquieti, awards the Inquieto dell'Anno — a recognition of the person, of their being, rather than of a work.
Music happens in a convent. The Percorsi Sonori concert season is held in the cloisters of the Santa Caterina convent complex at Finalborgo.
And the stone itself is a cultural object. Pietra di Finale faces the tower of the Castello Vuillermin, carries the loggia columns of Palazzo De Raymondi and built the Romanesque bell tower at Calvisio Vecchia.
