Lazio Climate Patterns

The Tyrrhenian coast and Rome itself share a typical Mediterranean climate: hot, dry summers with temperatures regularly above 30°C in July and August, and mild, wet winters that rarely drop below freezing. Rain is concentrated in autumn and, to a lesser extent, spring, with summer usually the driest season.

Inland and at elevation -- the Apennine ridges of Rieti and Frosinone provinces, and to a lesser extent the higher points of the Castelli Romani -- conditions are noticeably cooler and wetter, with real winters that bring occasional snow. The volcanic lake districts sit in between: Lake Bolsena and the Alban Hills moderate summer heat somewhat compared with Rome, part of why the Castelli Romani developed as a warm-weather retreat for the capital in the first place.
