How to Get Around Aosta Valley
Getting Around
Aosta Valley has no major airport of its own -- the closest international airports are Turin, Milan, and Geneva (Switzerland), each roughly 1.5-2.5 hours from Aosta by car.
The Mont Blanc Tunnel connects Courmayeur directly to Chamonix, France, and the Great St Bernard Tunnel connects the valley to Switzerland -- both make the region a genuine crossroads for an Alpine road trip, not just a dead-end valley.
A rail line and the A5 autostrada run the length of the main valley, connecting Aosta to Turin and the rest of Italy's rail network, but a car is genuinely useful -- often necessary -- for reaching castles, ski resorts, and villages off the main valley floor.
Regional connections
How easily, and at what cost, can you combine the region’s main destinations?
| Route | Best option | One-way time | Travel Smart take |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aosta and Cogne | Bus | ~1 hr typical, not a timetable | Comfortable as a day trip. Aosta works well as a base for Cogne. |
| Aosta and Courmayeur | Bus | ~1 hr typical, not a timetable | Comfortable as a day trip. Aosta works well as a base for Courmayeur. |
| Cogne and Courmayeur | Bus or car | ~2 hr typical, not a timetable | Better as a separate stay than a day trip. |
Cost compares the options for each route rather than quoting a fare: inexpensive means the price is not a factor in planning, moderate cost means a real line in the budget, and the expensive option is one worth weighing against the alternative. Fares change from year to year; the ranking between them does not.
