Two churches to the same saint, a promontory and a bay — and they are all within a kilometre of each other.
On the Aurelia. The parish church of San Lorenzo, built 1624-1637 by Andrea Storace, Baroque on a single nave, keeping the late Gothic bell tower of the building before it and holding a polyptych of San Lorenzo of 1584. The oratorio di Sant'Antonio Abate stands immediately beside it, a few metres from the sand.
On the promontory. Punta Crena carries the watchtower of 1559, the remains of a convent, a secular olive grove and the ruins of the Byzantine castrum that Rotari destroyed in 643. Mid-slope below them stands the old church of San Lorenzo, all that survives of a Benedictine monastery, attached to the abbey of Lérins by an agreement of 28 August 1127.
And behind the promontory. The baia dei Saraceni, the natural harbour that served Byzantine shipping and the Del Carretto fleet, and that was silted up — by the Genoese in 1341, though the record calls the attribution controversial.
