Best destinations by month
April and May are the best months: tulips in the countryside, blossom in the parks, long light evenings, and terraces open at the first hint of sun.
Late April is King’s Day, when the whole city turns orange and goes out on the water — extraordinary to see and impossible to find a room for.
June to August is warm, long-evening weather and the busiest season; the canals are full of boats and the queues are at their worst.
September and October are excellent: mild, golden, far fewer people.
November to February is grey, damp, windy and dark by half past four — but the museums are empty, the brown cafes make sense, and prices drop. It rarely freezes hard enough for the canals to bear skaters, though the city hopes every year.
